“Going Home”…

There is an enchanting short story by Charles Dickens that is largely forgotten. It is called “A Child’s Dream of a Star”. Check it out on line. It is a reflection of a man trying to cope with the death of a child in a time when infant mortality was still prevalent. I have used it on occasion through my ministry with bereaved parents. It comes to mind in conjunction with what Mick has written here…

Fr K

… I am always happiest when I am looking forward, planning for the future, making a list, deciding what to do tomorrow, planning holidays etc. – it seems to me that we are ‘programmed for the future’, programmed in fact for Heaven!:- “Yes you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know Him, but I know Him because I am from him and He sent me” (Jn7v.28ff)

When my youngest daughter was little she asked, “Daddy, where did I come from?” I knew the answer: ‘You came from the starry, starry skies”! – Esther replied, “When I die, will I go back to the starry skies?” – I replied ‘You will indeed’!

In childhood, I felt that I didn’t really belong, that my home was somehow somewhere else, and that I was in this world only for the meanwhile & would one day return home: I believe many people have this same feeling. Irish folk talk of ‘going home’ when one ‘passes on’ – to me, this is an accurate description! Jesus often talked about the home that He had come from and would be returning to: He said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world’: Pontius Pilate, mystified asks ‘Where do you come from?’ – he seems awed by Jesus, (almost) treating Him with respect and is troubled by Jesus’ talk of a ‘Kingdom’, particularly as it is ‘other-worldly’. Pilate feels threatened by a challenge to his authority, but I feel he actually wants to find out about this ‘other’ Kingdom (Pilate’s wife will have none of this and tells Pilate not to ‘have anything to do with that man’ (she says she was ‘spooked’ by a dream she had about Him! Mt27:19)

Jesus says “The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent’”- later (v.33) “The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” – no wonder Pilate was bewildered! (Jn6v.38ff) “I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going ……you are from below; I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world’……He who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from Him I tell the world’ (Jn 8v.14,23&26)

Jesus tells his disciples (Jn4v.2) “In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you’. So, who can possibly doubt that we have a Heavenly home? We have Jesus’ own word for it, His word too that one day we shall ‘go home’, if we truly believe and trust in Him.

I know now that my boyish instincts (and young Esther’s) were right – we shall all (eventually) go back – to the ‘starry, starry skies’!

It’s not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Going to fear no more
Mother’s there expecting me
Father’s waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew

Frank (RiP)

Many people will remember Margaret & Frank who were long standing friends at OLSS. They moved to the West Country a few years back. Frank died peacefully at home with the constant vigilance of Margaret at his bedside on Sept 3rd. His Requiem is this Monday 23rd 11.30am at St Dunstan’s RC Church, Somerton. I have Margaret’s contact details and I am sure that she would like to hear from old friends in Greenwich.

Greenwich Fanzone 2020

Are you aware of the proposals for the “Fanzone” in Greenwich park in June & July next year? There is something called the “UEFA EURO” that requires large public screens to be erected and the area opposite Queens House to be sectioned off for ticket holders only, with adjacent road closures. Apparently, there was a “consultation” in July though we heard nothing. Please see my letter in Church and make your concerns known to the council.

Thank You for your Offering
