Out of the Mouths of Babes…
“If Jesus is God, why is He also the Son of God?” A question from a seminarian, a nun, or a theologian? No. This was from a 7yr old, one of the 19 children who received their First Holy Communion at OLSS last Sunday, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.
This little child’s enquiring mind isreminiscent of the young St Thomas Aquinas turning the question over and over in his head:“What is God?” Also at a tender age, St Teresa of Avila went off on a quest for martyrdom, saying: “I want to see God”. And St Therese of the Child Jesus was also already praying deeply as a child, sitting in a corner of herroom, “thinking, thinking about God”.Children are indeed capable of profound reflection and, with guidance and prayer, of grasping glimmers of theological truths. This year, we had a great team of parents and catechist-leaders guiding the children on their journey of faith. Thank you to the verysupportive Parents, the ‘First Catechists’, who, week in and week out, brought their children to the preparation classes and helped them with their homework. Thank you also to Ernie & Zara for their dedication, leading activities, pepping up the children, and (as kids will be kids), keeping them in line.

Here are the reflections from some of the children:
I was two years old when my brother Alex received his first Holy Communion in this church. I was very young, but attended all his preparation classes. Now it is my turn and I had Tina, Ernie and Zara, who were so caring and thoughtful leading me close to Jesus. I felt a little voice inside, calling me by my name and I felt warmth and love. We learned about the meaning of the Eucharist and how Jesus divided the bread among his disciples, giving thanks. I feel Jesus so close to me today, just like to his disciples then, and I know that He will be with me all my life! Maria Elena Volponi

I am so excited that my soul is getting fed. I learned a lot when preparing to receive Jesus. And now I know that I belong in Jesus’s heart.

‘Jesus, I put myself in your hands, keep me tight until tomorrow.’ This was the prayer thatI used to say when I was little. Now that I will soon be receiving you, Jesus, I will hold tight to you, because you help me to be good. Jesus, I beg you to help all those who need your help.

So to end, how does one even attempt to answer the introductory question above? A good start might be to contemplate with the children, Rublev’s painted meditation on themystery of the Trinity. Then maybe go on to unpack John 1:1-3. Who knows, by the power of the Word, they just might begin to plumb the profundity of the Almighty One-though- Three.

Next weekend is the Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul. I was surprised to discover how few Catholic people seemed to be aware of the death of St Paul in Rome alongside Peter at the time of the persecution of Nero in ad66. As a Roman Citizen, Paul would at least have been entitled to a “dignified” execution unlike his companion. A long-standing tradition proclaims that he was beheaded outside the city wall where a great basilica has stood for centuries. Recent scientific investigations have established 1stC bone fragments with threads of purple & gold cloth beneath the altar and under a slab of marble inscribed Paulo Apostolo Mart. In 2009 Pp Benedict XVI announced that he was confident that these are the authentic remains of St Paul.

There will be a special Mass in the Evening of Thursday July 4th at 7.00pm in support of Maggie following the sad death of her nephew Nigel to which all are welcome.
