The Man At The Back Of The Church.

The man at the back of the church for 70 years was my Dad, Paddy Curran. Paddy came to Greenwich in 1948, from Cappaquin, County Waterford, Ireland. Looking for work, he stayed just yards away from here, when he first got married to his beloved Frances, a blind date mind, in 1960, they were blessed with 5 children. Paddy moved to Charlton in 1968, and got the bus to Our Lady Star of the Sea every Sunday. He worked alongside many priests including. Mgr Farrell, Fr McCarthy, Fr Murphy, Fr Lavery & Fr Kevin, and doing many jobs: Greeter, Altar Server, collection, teaching the Altar Servers. He cleaned and painted the church many times. He was presented with The Benemerenti Medal, from the Pope for 60 years service to Our Lady Star of the Sea, which Dad wore with great pleasure. Dad’s health waned, over the years, believe it or not, he had 2 heart attacks, 2 triple heart bypass ops, heart failure, kidney failure, COPD, Emphysema, Epilepsy, fluid retention and many, many bouts of pneumonia. His walking declined too. But you would have never realised it, he never showed it. Dad came with Frances and me for the last 3 years in a wheelchair, which he hated. Gradually I took up his roll, while he took great pleasure telling me right from wrong as he sat with that beaming smile and dignity.

The biggest fight Paddy survived was the death of Mum on 28th September 2016 after 56 years of marriage and 61 years together. He missed her badly, less than a year later Paddy joined her in Heaven, 19th September 2017. Everyone would mention to me, who was the man at the back of the church who said hello every Sunday, Easter and Christmas, who loved all the children and babies, and put a smile on everyone’s face? I have the honour to say it was my Dad, my Hero Patrick, born 13/06/1928, died 19/09/2017, yes he was 89 (91 last week) you would have never realised it.

May God Have Mercy on his Soul.
And may he Rest in Peace – Tom

Thursday St Alban (3rdC) was the first British martyr. All we know about him is all we need to know: that he lived at Verulamium (St Albans) in the mid 3rd century. During a period of severe persecution, he was faced unexpectedly with a simple, decision: He chose to confess faith in Christ and was executed by the Roman authorities. Time may come when we may need to face that same decision ourselves! Longstanding devotion to his memory causes the name of his city
