 A bad day in Greenwich!

I happened to be looking at GOOGLE maps, examining road plans and new traffic schemes. I drifted over the site plan of St Joseph’s and was gratified to notice that there are 10 Reviews that score very high with an overall 4.4 out of 5* for top marks. Comments like: “This is a lovely little church, very welcoming & friendly” 5* Or: “I was on holiday from Canada… The sister came and spoke to me, she recognized that I was new… I stayed after mass to chat with the priests. They are very warm people” 5*. So, I checked through the further comments. How had we slipped down the ratings? There were a couple of 4* “standard church” etc fair enough, and then a 1* from a reviewer ominously named Mike F! who writes: “One of the most rudest bunch I have ever encountered. Incredibly unhelpful over the phone and will do their utmost best to flog you off. Avoid”. Well Mike if that was me, I regret if I do not always have the best telephone manner. My mother was a GPO operator in Mayfair during the war who connected calls to the war office. Mum still puts on her best BBC accent whenever she answers the phone… and despairs when I don’t! So, I thought I better check out this “Mike F”! Fortunately, this is not the same “Mike F-ox-” who runs our Facebook page because he would have soon got a very sharp “comeuppance”, as my mother would say. Whoever this Mike F is, he must have been having a very bad day. He has only written Three reviews and every one ranks just 1*! For another local hostelry, which I quite like and commend he suggests: “Shockingly bad… I’ve had better meals at whetherspoons!”

From Greenwich, life must have gone downhill for Mike to a sandwich bar in Mayfair: “Lazy and filthy way of serving food”. Oh well Mike, I hope things improve with your life. By the way only 1* for you too. Nobody can be the “Most Rudest”. You are either “Most Rude” or “the Rudest”. Also, “utmost best” is a bit like bestest. Is that splitting hairs or infinitives? And whetherspoons has no h but needs a W! So, then I thought I better check out OLSS: 24 reviews averaging 4.6. Lots of 5* “Beautiful church and a friendly priest” (That would be me then!) Lots of 4* “there was a cat who obviously waited for someone who could open the door… We tried to keep the cat out, but it came in. I think it wasn’t the first time” and a 2* “The church had a musty smell… Badly behaved children… too many lay people involved with communion.” Perhaps that writer would prefer if there were No Children as is often seen elsewhere and laments the fact that there are so many people seeking communion in the first place. Ah well, so much for Google and I haven’t even looked at “Trip Advisor”. How would Jesus rate us? If you turn to Revelation Ch2&3 you will find his reviews for 7 churches in Asia Minor at the end of the first century. They all score about 3.5*. The Lord’s comments to the Church at Ephesus might apply to us:

I know that you are patient and strong for my name’s sake. And you have not given up. But here is what I say against you. You do not love as you loved at first. So, remember how you once were: Stop! Live the way you did at first. If not, I will come and move your lamp from its place”.

Now I’ve only just restored that lamp, about two years ago and I don’t want it tampered with!

God Bless
Fr Kevin
