The Eucharistic Congress Adoremus 2018 was a unique opportunity for the churches to come together and reflect on the centrality of the Eucharist and particularly to explore the place of Eucharistic Adoration. It was held at the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.
On the first day, Canon Mervyn Tower, Canon David Oakley & Sr Magaret Atkins (CRSA) talked about the Scriptural context of the Eucharist and the Eucharist in the life of the church. Cn Mervyn referred us to St Jerome who said; “Ignorance of the scripture is ignorance of Christ and the Holy Eucharist”. I.e. Catholicism is the Biblical faith. The Holy Spirit teaches us the truth about our salvation. Cn Oakley referred to the church as the Body of Christ where the Eucharist is the source and summit of our Christian life. Christian faith is all about remembering:
“DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME”
The three speakers spoke about the importance of the Eucharist especially in adoration: EUCHARISTIC ADORATION IS THE PRIVILEDGE MEETING PLACE WITH THE LORD where one can have silence with God.
On the 2nd day, Bishop Robert Barron spoke to the congress. He is an inspirational speaker. His addresses can still be seen on YouTube search “Robert Barren Adoremus”. He referred to the Mass as a privileged encounter where The Lord is working a Supreme Mystery. Jesus calls and we respond. We meet, talk, listen and then eat. We respond to the Gospel with the Creed. Jesus is the word made flesh. Bishop Barron also spoke about
a. Finding the centre of our lives,
He said that when Christ is the centre of our being, then the rest of our lives fall in harmony.
b. Know that you are a sinner
He picked on a saying of GK Chesterton: We need to recognise that we are all sinners in the same boat and we all are sea sick. It is the light that reveals to us that we are sinners and filling our soul with God is going to make us happy and God is Love.
c. Realise that your life is not about you
Our life is about finding God’s plan for us. Everything that happens to us directly or indirectly is the will of God.
We enjoyed The Rise Theatre Performance Group who presented a piece titled “JESUS IS HERE” which was really inspiring.
During the two days, we shared presentations on different subjects: Teaching the children to pray before the Eucharist, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Ministry and Practice) etc. Exhibition of Religious products from the Catholic Charities in England & Wales and other activities were also taking place alongside the congress. Two masses were offered on Sunday morning. The programme ended on Sunday with the Eucharistic Procession round the Metropolitan Cathedral.
Our experience in Liverpool will be with us forever because Liverpool people are caring and friendly. We thank God Almighty for our Journey of Mercies. We are grateful to Fr Kevin & Sr Mary for the opportunity to attend on behalf of St Joseph’s in Greenwich.
